Τhe LIFE – FOODPrint campaign initiates on Monday, November 22, 2021 a new activity – a series of seminars to students in professions and disciplines related to food waste.
The aim of the seminars is to inform and present good practices for reducing food waste.
The FOODPrint campaign collaborates with The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth and in particular with the Public School of Higher Vocational & Technical Education MIEEK that offers two years programs of studies (Diploma-NQF 5b, 120ECTS) in three areas: a) Pastry and Baking, b) Culinary Arts and c) Catering Services. All programs are accredited by the Agency for Quality Assurance and Certification of Higher Education (DIPAE) in Cyprus. The studies are free and all students are eligible for the government’s financial subsidy.
MIEEK students have the opportunity to learn useful facts about the extent of the problem of food waste at European level and in Cyprus, based on research conducted by the FOODPrint campaign.
In Cyprus, according to this research, food waste amounts to 182 kg per year per person, ie about half a kilo per day! This could be largely avoided and food could have been consumed, saving money, protecting the environment and offering food to those in need.
The cooperation with MIEEK focuses on the training of students as future professionals in hotels, restaurants etc on the use of good practices to reduce waste.
A total number of 5 seminars will be held in MIEEK Schools throughout Cyprus.
The cooperation of the FOODPrint team with the Ministry will be extended in the new year, involving similar presentations in Evening Schools, Technical Secondary Education as well as other institutions of higher education.Participating students will receive educational material from the FOODPrint campaign aimed at information and awareness.
